Youth Services

One of the provisions of the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) is the establishment of a Youth Committee to act as a liaison to the local Workforce Investment Board.

The committee is responsible for allocating WIOA resources, implementing programs, assessing the needs of youth as they relate to preparation for future participation in the workforce, and developing a vision or plan for meeting these identified needs. Ideally, the Youth Committee should involve and engage a broad cross section of the community so that education, youth development, employment training, work readiness efforts, and funding streams are better coordinated and leveraged to complement each other and provide a holistic approach to the many issues facing youth.

The Workforce Partnership of Greater Rhode Island Youth Committee members are appointed by the Board. Committee members include individuals from local, state and regional youth-related agencies, members of the Workforce Investment Board, educators, superintendents, juvenile justice workers as well as the public at-large. All committee members, except those appointed to the Board, are non-voting members of the Workforce Investment Board.

The Youth Committee worked early on to develop a mission, vision and strategic plan related to its goals and objectives. These are considered living documents and are reviewed periodically for affirmation or revision.

Like the Workforce Investment Board, the Youth Committee has sub-committees created as either standing committees or ad-hoc to meet a specific need. Committees carry the bulk of the work and bring their recommendations to the full Youth Committee for endorsement.
