My family and I moved to Rhode Island from Colorado in June of 2016. We are originally from MA, but love RI so much that we decided to become Rhodies when we moved back from CO. For the remainder of that year, I juggled actively looking for work, searching for a house, purchasing one, then working on it.

I found out about the OJT program through Siren Marine. They are a small early-stage company that needed to hire and train more people. The OJT was a great solution for everyone, as it gave them the ability to hire me, gave me a great career to get back on my feet, and has provided very valuable training since.

Thank you Aaron, welcome to Rhode Island and thanks for sharing your OJT success story!

I can't thank the team at OJT enough! If it wasn't for this program I'm not sure if I would have the dream job that I have now.

The team worked so well with me to make this process effective and also, easy.
The great thing about the Workforce Partnership is that they truly work for both the employer and the employee. They sincerely want to see everyone succeed.

More companies need to utilize this program. It simply makes sense.  Thank you again and keep up the hard work!

I am extremely grateful for the help I received with the On-the-Job Training program through the Workforce Partnership of Greater Rhode Island. There are very few times we find a job that we find truly rewarding. A job, where you go in everyday and make a difference in the lives of people you may never get a chance to meet. Being hired as the Recruitment Specialist for the Mentor Rhode Island: The Rhode Island Mentoring Partnership I help find young people the role models, in this case mentors, that will help them through their school-age years and beyond.

Being the Recruitment Specialist I have learned invaluable skills around marketing, networking, training, and presenting that I can use for the rest of my professional life. I work with people who continue to help me strive to be better professionally and personally; who help push me to achieve great things.

I have not only found a job, but a home, and I am very happy for that! With the assistance of the On-the-Job Training program I have gained a great career.

My name is Mark Amargo, Support Center Associate at Vertikal6. I am a U.S. Army Veteran.  Military traditions, customs, and organizational processes differ in many ways to traditional corporate life. The Workforce Partnership of Greater RI’s On-the-Job (OJT) Training program provides that natural adjustment phase every combat Veteran needs to successfully transition back into the civilian workforce.

The training I have received at Vertikal6 through the OJT program has helped me focus my talents to better serve our clients and become a valuable member of the Vertikal6 team.  As a member of the Vertikal6 Support Center, you find yourself serving as the first responder to your customer’s information technology challenges/needs.   For every ticket assigned to you, you have to be able to decisively assess the situation; troubleshoot the technology challenge; and/or provide recommendations for the right solution that meets the customer’s need.  To be competent and confident in this role requires education as well as experience.  The OJT program provides the opportunity to gain real hands-on experience in a live working environment that you cannot get from traditional classroom instruction.

The Workforce Partnership of Greater RI and its staff are changing lives, one candidate at a time; while simultaneously providing local businesses with qualified employees.  I am thankful and honored to have been a part of the OJT program and highly recommend it to all seeking new employment opportunities.

Thank you Mark, for sharing your OJT success story!

I found out about the On-the-Job Training program from the staff at SAMI (New England Tech), which I was enrolled in when I was unemployed and training for a new career. The benefits of the OJT program are many, however, the most important to me is that employers are more likely to take a chance on someone who is new to the industry, providing career opportunities that may otherwise be unavailable.

Thanks to the OJT program, the Management of Hi-Tech Machine and Fabrication took a chance on hiring me with only entry level, classroom skills and then provided extensive training to me. Hi-Tech is a leader in the industry and is an excellent employer to work for.

It is unlikely that I would have landed a position at such a top notch organization without the support of the OJT program."

I was new to the area and looking for employment. I have an extensive professional background in education and medicine.

The Workforce Partnership of Greater Rhode Island and the netWORKri office helped me to get my job working as a pre-school teacher at Dr. Day Care in North Providence through the On-the-Job Training grant.

The program provided me with the tools needed to assist me in being successful at my job. The On-the-Job Training program gave me great support and training and I am very grateful.

Hey! I’m John, and 6 short months ago, (May of 2016), I was a senior at Johnson & Wales University. At the time, I was interning with the Central Rhode Island Chamber of Commerce. It was here where I first heard about the OJT Program.

The internship lead me to an event where I met and connected with the CEO of an aquarium design studio called Something Fishy, Inc.  Word spread to Something Fishy of how great a program OJT training offered thanks to a trainee who was a part of the program during the time of my internship.  I then followed up and met with the CEO & Fish Guy. Resulting from that, I had to complete the application and approval process for OJT. I was happily surprised on how efficient everything went and was accepted almost immediately! After successful completion, I am now the Marketing Manager at this great establishment and could not be happier!

The monthly evaluations with my Program Analyst, as well as my CEO, were perfect for measuring my personal growth and gave me a great understanding of my quality of work, attendance, and any areas which needed improvement (if any).

Overall this was an amazing program which I would strongly recommend to anyone interested in obtaining training and assistance in their future career paths. This has created a new beginning for me and I look forward to continuing to grow personally and professionally in my career.

Thank you John, for sharing your OJT success story!

My name is Alexander Kithes. I am an electrical engineer at Electro Standards Laboratories (“ESL”), and I have just finished the Workforce Partnership of Greater Rhode Island’s On-the-Job Training Program at ESL.

I studied engineering at Boston University and Brown University. I began to look for work after completing my master's degree in December 2015, at a time of year when that's not an easy task.

Thankfully, I found Electro Standards Laboratories, and through their partnership with the Workforce Partnership of Greater Rhode Island and the Department of Labor and Training, I was hired as an electrical engineer!

ESL and the On-the-Job Training Program staff have been incredibly supportive throughout the process, and I have gotten so much practical experience in programming, system development, and quite a few other aspects of electrical engineering during my training. I look forward to continued employment at ESL, and to the completion of our exciting project.

Thank you Alex, for sharing your OJT success story!

Learning about embedded software development at Electro Standards Laboratories through the Workforce Partnership of RI On-The-Job Training Program has been extremely rewarding. The coordination between ESL and the OJT program provided a seamless path to the necessary training I needed for the software/firmware engineer position.

The training I received at ESL is an enhancement to my 30-year career as a software engineer. I enjoy the various challenges that working at ESL provides. I am now a senior software engineer who has enjoyed my career immensely over the years, and I still thrill at taking on new projects, increasing my skill set, and learning new technologies as they emerge.

After being unemployed for close to 7 months and losing a bit of hope, I decided to sit down one day and really put it out in the universe what I was looking for in a career. I knew I did not want to continue on the path I was in an unfulfilling career. I wanted to do something more rewarding, wellness based, and where I was truly helping people.

The very next day when searching Indeed.com, I saw the posting for Spa Manager at Massage Envy. I immediately applied and shortly after received a phone call from the owner. I knew as I was speaking with him, that this was the job I wanted and needed.  After my first interview, the owner let me know about a program offered through the Workforce Partnership of Greater Rhode Island that would not only provided support and feedback in my transition from the restaurant industry to the spa industry, but that would also help me to build a wardrobe that I would be proud to go to work in.

I am now working in a field I love with amazing co-workers. This program allowed me to get back on my feet and build my confidence in a time when it was lacking. I have been with Massage Envy for about 7 months now and was recently promoted to General Manager of the Wayland Square location. Through hard work, dedication and the support of this program, I know I have a bright future with this company.

I was extremely impressed with the attention given to me and my fellow participants by the staff of this program and was pleased with all of the benefits it provided.  I would recommend this program to anyone who is looking to begin a new career or anyone who wishes to change their change specialty.

Thank you to the Workforce Partnership of Greater Rhode Island for all your help & confidence.

I worked 15 years at my last job. Then when that ran its course, I stayed home for a year to take care of my step children. I was a bit nervous returning to the workforce again because the last time I was looking for a job was 1999 and I wasn't quite sure how the job market had changed.  The OJT program staff gave me the encouragement and the confidence that I needed to do my job and not be afraid to ask if I needed extra training or to review some procedures.

I was very comfortable knowing someone was there to answer any questions or concerns I had and in my case that made all the difference in the world.  Thank you for helping me fit into a job I am very happy doing in a market that I am comfortable in.

Thank you Ann, for sharing your OJT success story!

The support and guidance provided by ESL Staff and the Workforce Partnership of Greater Rhode Island is greatly appreciated. This company has taught me more about modern control theory than I could have obtained on my own or anywhere else.

I look forward to continuing my employment at ESL and contributing toward a successful completion of an exciting and challenging project.

With no previous experience in this industry, OJT was a great tool for helping me to gain the skills and knowledge necessary for me to excel in my new career.  The staff at the Workforce Partnership of Greater Rhode Island worked with me to ensure that the company was a good fit for me and was available to address any questions or concerns I may have had.

I was working part time as a cashier at Dave’s Marketplace and had graduated from CCRI for about seven months. I was on the CCRI job postings page and I saw the post for a secretary listed for Connelly Law so I sent an email with my resume attached to it and hoped for the best.

The very next day I was called to set an interview time and date. I was hired the very same day I was interviewed about three hours later. My manager had told me about the OJT program and how they will help in training me for my position.

Everyone at OJT was very helpful with any questions or concerns I had. The staff was so helpful my first time going into the NetWORKri office and helping me understand the process. I am glad I worked with the OJT program for the past six months.

Ending up at O&G Studio has been an odd fever dream of pleasant coincidence. It all began when Sara and Jonathan were my guest critics at one of my final reviews in my senior year at the Rhode Island School of Design. They co-own a windsor chair making company. I made a parody of a windsor chair. Somehow, these otherwise isolated facts lined up perfectly. We all kept in contact and a couple visits later turned into a job opportunity.

My experience here at O&G has been one of patience, generosity, and rigor. I feel absolutely lucky to be where I am, and it is programs like OJT that enable experiences like mine. For that, I am grateful.

I graduated college and found myself looking for a job. Thankfully, VR Industries hired me as their marketing administrator and entered me into the Workforce Partnership of Greater Rhode Island On-the-Job Training program. The setup process was quick and painless.

The On-the-Job Training program is a great tool for any Rhode Islander. Their staff was welcoming, knowledgeable, and invested in my success. One of the great parts of the program is how efficiently it runs. Every time I contacted my Program Analyst I received a response within a day, which helped to alleviate stress and provide me with the best training possible.

I strongly suggest using the On-the-Job Training program to give people the opportunity to gain experience and knowledge in a new career. This program has truly helped to develop my professional skill sets. I can confidently say that the combination of my Program Analyst with The Workforce Partnership of Greater Rhode Island, the on-the-job training, and VR Industries has provided me with the skills and experience to be a great employee.

My name is Sue Lima and I started working at Interplex Engineered Products in January of 2015 as a receptionist/administrative assistant. My previous employer, a daycare center, had closed down and I was looking for another job when a friend of mine, who also works at Interplex, mentioned to me that they were hiring. I came in for an interview and was offered the job.

The On-the-Job training was very beneficial to me because I did not have any administrative experience. It helped me learn a lot of new skills including Microsoft Excel, Accounts Payable (matching invoices with purchase orders and filing) and Accounts Receivable (sending and mailing invoices to customers). I have also taken on additional duties such as mass updating of metal prices, entering TRW/Cooper and CAP carrier information data onto the appropriate Excel spreadsheets and assisting with new hire protocol. This position has provided me with many new skills to hopefully advance my career in the future.

I think this is a very successful program and helps a lot of people get back into the workforce. This job has been by far my best and favorite position yet.

Thank you Susan, for sharing your OJT success story!

The following was written by Jonathan Banks, Chief Operating Officer for Siren Marine.

Jonathan Banks, Chief Operating Office for Siren Marine
Jonthan Banks at Siren Marine

Thanks to the Workforce Partnership of Greater Rhode Island’s On-The-Job-Training Program, I landed my dream job at Siren Marine.

I have spent much of the past 20 years in various executive positions in the marine industry, including running Sail America, the national trade association for the sailing industry. Unfortunately, the sailing industry got hit pretty hard by the great recession, which ultimately forced Sail America to eliminate the Executive Director position and close the office. Finding a new job in an industry that was a shadow of its former self proved to be extremely challenging.  During my job search I met Dan Harper, the founder and President of Siren Marine, an emerging marine technology company that had pioneered an innovative boat monitoring system. After several discussions, Dan felt I would be a great fit for the company as I had a tremendous amount of experience in the boating industry, but he was concerned that I didn't have the necessary technical and telecommunications skills for the position. Also, as Siren Marine was still in start-up mode, it didn't have the resources to hire an executive, no matter how good a fit, that still needed a considerable amount of training to learn the business, market and technology.

We were both scratching our heads trying to figure out a way to proceed, when the OJT program came to the rescue. A timely and fortuitous meeting with a Business Service Specialist from the Department of Labor and Training identified several programs, including OJT, which could help Siren Marine hire and train new staff, including me. After Siren Marine completed the OJT application, I was immediately contacted by a counselor from netWORKri and visited their office for a short interview. Within days, the OJT program was approved and I was able to join Siren Marine as its new Chief Operating Officer.

To be honest, I was initially skeptical of the program because I thought it would take a long time to process and there would be lot of red tape to jump through. In reality, the application and approval process was extremely fast and efficient.

Since joining Siren Marine about six months ago, both the company and I have benefitted enormously from the OJT program. I knew there was going to be a lot to learn, and a day hasn’t passed that wasn’t a big learning experience. Throughout the program we had regular visits from our Program Analyst who was extremely helpful and ensured the program was meeting expectations and running smoothly.

I encourage all companies to meet with the Workforce Partnership of Greater Rhode Island to learn more about the programs that are helping support Rhode Islander businesses and putting people back to work.

Thank you Jonathan, for sharing your OJT success story!
